Must Read Information for Louisiana Mesothelioma Victims

The per capita ratio for Mesothelioma cases in Louisiana is astoundingly high, the highest in the nation in fact. Louisiana residents will continue to experience higher than national averages of this disease as the combination of momentarily relaxed Mesothelioma legislature (this is already slated to change) and Hurricane Katrina asbestos exposure coupled with the lower than national standards of asbestos protection for employees continues to contribute to the high rate of Mesothelioma cases.

Mesothelioma is developed only by breathing in or ingesting toxic doses of asbestos. When Mesothelioma develops, it often begins as asbestosis, which is a rare but fatal disease that scars the inside of the lungs creating breathing difficulty.

Asbestosis is not the same disease as Mesothelioma, but a great number of asbestosis cases develop into Mesothelioma. Often this development happens so fast that there really isn’t time to spend on the diagnosis of asbestosis.

Mesothelioma is a form of lung cancer, attacking the protective sac around the lungs, heart, stomach, and occasionally the intestines. Mesothelioma has a remarkably high death rate of nearly 100%, although there is new hope with detection prior to symptoms and cutting edge technological advancements.

It is definitely recommended that individuals who are aware of previous exposure to asbestos, even if the exposure was limited, be tested for Mesothelioma and other asbestos related diseases. This early detection has saved lives. Mesothelioma doctors have furthered Mesothelioma research over the past ten years, as this emerging health crisis swept across the country.

Mesothelioma research has come a long way in a short time. Since Mesothelioma is considered a rare disease, it has not received large funds for research and treatment options, but what funds have been made available have been put to the best use possible.

Research involves newer medications and surgeries, as well as additional therapies and nutritional support. Mesothelioma researchers suggest that those patients who enter therapy for support, both physical and psychotherapy, have more positive outcomes or longer stages of health and a better quality of life. These findings have naturally been disputed, but the research is clear.

Mesothelioma specialists are continuously attempting to find new and improves methods of treating Mesothelioma and other asbestos related illnesses. Treatment options for Mesothelioma were initially limited due to the complex nature of the disease coupled with the rarity of the disease. Mesothelioma is still very aggressive with a very high mortality rate, but there are more options available to Mesothelioma victims than there were even just ten years ago.

Professionals, whether Mesothelioma lawyers, doctors, or therapists, have a greater understanding of the disease and how it works in the body and mind. While this has yet to lead to longer life spans for Mesothelioma victims, it has led to higher quality of life for those who are stricken with the disease. For those who have been diagnosed with Mesothelioma, this higher quality of life means everything.

As with any severe illness, Mesothelioma victims feel the longer they are able to put off more drastic measures and still extract significant joy from the life the greater the gift. Nobody wants assistance in the basics of life, and every day that a Mesothelioma victim retains a higher level of health, the greater the chance they have for sound family experiences.

Mesothelioma is a treacherous disease, and the public truly wonders why asbestos, despite its fire resistant qualities, is still in use at all in the United States. It just seems like such a pointless waste to place so many people in jeopardy, even if it is minimal jeopardy.

Mesothelioma lawsuits are a natural part of most Mesothelioma patient agendas. In many cases these lawsuits are necessary in order to gain the appropriate medical coverage necessary. In some cases Mesothelioma lawsuits are used to heighten public awareness and expose companies that have willingly exposed their workers to the dangers of asbestos. In either regard, Mesothelioma lawsuits are typically fought and won, and each victory is another notch in the belts of the American laborer.

The nature of most Mesothelioma lawsuits is based purely on the desire to cover reasonable costs, such as medical expenses, burial, and reasonable income loss coverage for bereaved spouses. Jury awards tend to be much higher than the initial damages sought based on the blatant company ignorance portrayed in most Mesothelioma cases.

The majority of companies who are sued for asbestos exposure do prefer to negotiate a Mesothelioma settlement over taking these cases to trial. Mesothelioma settlements typically provide the family with more than they initially really desire, provided the case is clear cut. Not all Mesothelioma cases are as clear cut as one might expect.

Types of Mesothelioma Cancer

Posted by: admin | Comments (8)
Types of Mesothelioma Cancer

Mesothelioma is a deadly form of cancer that affects the serous membranes surrounding the major organs of the body i.e. the lungs, heart and the abdominal organs, causing these vital organs to inflate with excessive fluid. This fluid further causes the improper functioning of the organs. The only known cause of this cancerous tumor is asbestos exposure. In this disease, malignant cells are built up in the protective linings (serous membranes) of several internal organs known as mesothelium. Different organs in the abdomen cavity can get affected by mesothelioma because of the presence of the protective linings surrounding them. The most common types of mesothelioma include:

* Pleural Mesothelioma,

* Peritoneal Mesothelioma, and

* Pericardial Mesothelioma.

Pleural Mesothelioma:

Pleural Mesothelioma is a tumor in which the lining of the lungs, or lung pleura, gets affected by malignant cells. The pleura is a soft protective tissue that surrounds the lungs in the chest cavity. It helps the lungs in breathing (respiration) by producing a serous fluid that lubricates the pleural surfaces to avoid the teasing of the lungs against the chest wall. The malignant cells, once entered the pleura, begin to spread and affect the surrounding organs and tissues. This leads to further complications resulting pain and severe symptoms.

Mesothelioma affecting pleura is of two categories:

Diffused or Malignant (Cancerous):

It is the serious form of pleural mesothelioma that affects the pleural lining of the lungs and its surrounding organs.

Localized and Benign (Non-cancerous):

It is the non-cancerous form of mesothelioma, which does not affect all parts of the body except the pleura. However, it constricts the lung causing shortness of breath, and in some severe cases, pneumothorax (lung failure).

Peritoneal Mesothelioma:

Peritoneal Mesothelioma is a tumor of the peritoneum membrane or the abdomen lining, affecting many organs in the abdominal cavity including stomach. This form of mesothelioma cancer is less common than the pleural form but is more aggressive, resulting severe symptoms and short life expectancy. Like many other cancers, peritoneal mesothelioma can also be either malignant or benign.

Pericardial Mesothelioma:

Pericardial or Pericardium Mesothelioma is the rarest form of cancer, counting less than 10% of mesothelioma cases. In this form of cancer, fluid gets accumulated in the sac that encloses the heart. The main cause of this disease is the inhalation of asbestos fibers.

Due to the rarity of this disease, doctors and researchers have not clearly understood how the asbestos fibers enter the heart lining or pericardium. The only logical explanation so far about this form of cancer is the possibility of the asbestos fibers, converted into tiny pieces, transported from the lung into the heart by means of blood circulation. Once the asbestos fibers enter the heart, they expand the tissues in the chest cavity and the pericardium with excessive liquid, disrupting the working of the heart and causing chest pains with breathing disorders.

Each year, approximately 2,000 new cases of mesothelioma are diagnosed. At some point of their lives, the patients of mesothelioma have been exposed to asbestos that later cause the hideous cancer of mesothelioma. If you, at some point of your life, have worked in an asbestos-rich environment or used any asbestos materials, you should contact a mesothelioma doctor for correct diagnosis and best treatment options available.

Low Cholesterol Diet to Keep your Cholesterol Level Low

Genetic factors and diet are the two most common reasons for high cholesterol levels in your body. Though, you may not do anything about what you inherited genetically, you can always control your diet to keep the cholesterol level low, as required by your body.

A high cholesterol level leads to building up of a waxy substance cholesterol plaque in your arteries that obstructs the blood flow. Gradually, it leads a dysfunctional organ and may be a heart attack as well. A planned cholesterol diet is essential to keep it in control. In fact, a minimum level of cholesterol is always required for your body as it helps in repairing cell membrane, and in producing some useful hormones. However, after a certain level, it is dangerous to have high cholesterol level in your body.

Cholesterol Diet

Plan your diet and see what foods can help you lower your cholesterol level. There are some foods that can lower your cholesterol; while others can help it not rising beyond the required level. Generally, you should reduce fat intake and avoid oily and fried foods. Since fats are the main sources of calories, replace the saturated fats intensive diet by natural foods such as fruits and vegetables, and more of complex carbohydrates.

Low Cholesterol Diet

Certain foods are very good for low cholesterol. You should have fish, at least three times in a week. A few kinds of sea fish contain omega-3 fatty acid that helps you lower blood cholesterol. Reduce your fat intake. A low cholesterol diet should include more of complex carbohydrates such as whole grains and potatoes. These are excellent sources of energy and these take care of the benefits that you might miss because of avoiding fats.

While purchasing food items from market that are cooked, baked or roasted, read the label carefully and see there should not be any saturated oils. In addition, have lots of natural fruits, such as fruits or vegetables. These are rich source of fiber that your body requires for many reasons. Apples, carrots, brown rice, barley and legumes form a very good low cholesterol diet. A widely recommended herb psyllium also helps you reduce cholesterol level, if taken daily.

You can also have soya to control cholesterol level in your body. Research has shown that soya milk helps in reducing cholesterol. If possible, have at least 2-3 glasses of soya milk everyday. However, there are a variety of soya sweeteners such as for ice creams or desserts. Read out the sugar content and the amount of calories in those items and select the one that don’t have too many calories.

In true sense, a low cholesterol diet does not require wholesome changes in your diet; rather, it only requires using alternative methods of preparing food. For example, if you are in the habit of having salads, try having potato salad. Cut a few boiled potatoes into thin slices and soak these into plain, low fat yoghurt. Serve these with fresh chive, or even with onions. This is a good low cholesterol diet that is an excellent source of carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals.

High Cholesterol Diet

There is no such defined or standard high cholesterol diet. As long as you take planned diet and take enough of vitamin C, even a diet that is high in cholesterol too is not bad for your body. The problem arises when the excess of cholesterol is not balanced due to lack of vitamin C, or antioxidants. The high cholesterol level leads to arteries’ blockage, and heart related diseases.

If you see that your cholesterol level is higher than required, cut down on fats and oily foods, reduce the sodium content in your meals. A high cholesterol diet usually consists of meats, dairy products and foods that contain hydrogenated or saturated oils. Trans fats are particularly harmful for people who have high cholesterol. Many packed and processed foods that are available at stores contain trans fats or saturated oils, and you should avoid such products for a healthy body.

Even if you are taking required precautions with respect to your diet, ensure to have a decent intake of vitamin C. Have lots ofruits and vegetables as these are generally good antioxidants. Orange, lemon, papaya, cabbage and grapefruit are good sources of vitamin C.

If your doctor says that you should seriously avoid all fats and take minimum of salt, it means that you need to take such food items that have no cholesterol at all. Slowly, a cholesterol free diet helps you neutralize the high cholesterol level in your body. Some of the items that you can take are Orange Juice, Raw Melon, Seedless Raisins, Raw Watermelon, Boiled and Drained Asparagus, Apple, Banana, White Rice, Sweet Potato, Oat Bran, Spinach, Tomato, Cabbage, Cucumber, and Onion to name a few.

Garlic should be integral part of your cholesterol free diet since it is an excellent product for cholesterol control. Research has shown that a clove of garlic for 12 consecutive days starts bringing down the cholesterol level to normal.

Pleural Plaques, Asbestosis, Mesothelioma, MRSA and Flood claims - The insurers nightmare

The insurance industry is a giant, but even giants can be brought down.

We insure to cover loss and damage. This system works because more people insure than claim.

Insurance companies make more from our policies than they spend in claims. Simple, well no.

As we stumble through the credit crunch, increasing unemployment and the pressures of improving lifestyles, it has become obvious that a compensation culture once considered crass in the UK has suddenly achieved in the acceptability stake.

As long as the numbers  add up, risks managed and there are enough clients purchasing policies then things were fine. Slowly though, a number of issues have contributed to a major threat to the insurance companies.

Tens of millions of pounds was claimed in the UK at the time of the severe floods in 2007.

The issues with global warming and coastal erosion have created a financial headache for the insurance industry.

Thousands of people lost their homes in freak flooding storms. Many still trying to put their lives together. There was little that the insurers could do at that time, other than pay-out on terms of the policy. A major headache was born.

In 2008 an actress called Leslie Ash was awarded GBP5m after contracting a form of MRSA after cosmetic surgery.

This alerted the UK public to the menace of Hospital Acquired Infections, namely MRSA and C Diff,  Despite thousands of potential claims being put forward the insurance industry is fighting hard to keep the top tightly closed on claims for negligence. This is situation however may well turn sour for the insurers shortly as lawyers acting for the injured progress through the legal system.

The ticking time-bomb that is Asbestos Exposure may well prove to be the nemesis of the insurance industry. Damage to the human body by negligent asbestos exposure may well be thought of as the most deplorable form of negligence, but is the  wriggling and writhing of the insurance companies trying to cast-off their financial responsibilities to the insured just as bad, or indeed worse.

Pleural Plaques is though of as a mild medical condition, a resultant from asbestos exposure and offers little in the way of pain and suffering to those diagnosed with the condition. This is the stance the the House of Lords made when making change to the law and taking away the

claim of sufferers to damages in 2006. There was a great deal of lobbying by the insurance companies who said the damages for Pleural Plaques would cost the industry GBP300m plus and threaten the industry as a whole. Despite this sufferers of the condition focused on the fact that

their pain was the worry that the condition would turn into more serious Asbestos related diseases such as Asbestosis, Lung Cancer or the worse type, Mesothelioma.

Incidences of asbestos related illnesses are on a steady increase, this despite earlier predictions that they would be in decline. The latency period for diseases can be upwards of 50 years. The silent killer is indeed among us. Yet the insurance industry is doing it’s damnedest to avoid paying damages.

The Scottish Parliament at Holrood recently passed bill for the redress of Pleural Plaques Compensation, which should help those suffering the condition make claim for damages on 17th June. The Insurers are taking a judicial review through the courts with an announcement expected 12th June

It would be not only be against the will of the people but a disgrace of society if the giants of the insurance world  triumph at the expense of those that they were paid to protect.

Low Cholesterol Diet in Secondary Prevention of Coronary Disease

Going on a low cholesterol diet is not something to be taken lightly. A low cholesterol diet is indeed a lifestyle change, that not only you, but perhaps your entire family can go on. A low cholesterol diet is important for many people around the world who are at risk for heart disease and other medical conditions associated with heightened cholesterol. The diet is just as much about all the wonderful foods you can eat as it is about those foods you want to find alternatives to.

People have experienced over several generations that the body not only likes, but requires the vitamins, minerals, proteins, oxygen, enzymes, and hormones that are in these non-cooked, living super foods. Whether you simply would like to add more living super foods to your diet, or want to change your lifestyle in a more meaningful way, living super, natural foods are what you need to look at for these changes to happen.

Super foods

Super foods are getting a lot of publicity in the media today and that is because they are very vitamin and nutrient packed and they have lots of antioxidants that help prevent against illnesses and disease. They are effective in providing oxygen to the cells, detoxifying tissue, supporting thyroid functions, and providing the body with a natural source of commonly known vitamin and minerals such as calcium, sodium, and potassium, as well as trace nutrients some of which we have yet to be “discovered” or understood. Super foods are nutritional powerhouses high in phytonutrients-chemicals that occur naturally in food. Super foods are extremely rich in health promoting plant compounds like phytonutrients, co-factors, antioxidants, enzymes and much more.

For the best metabolism boosting results make sure you introduce super foods to your existing healthy diet and you will notice the benefits. Always buy your food in season and local if you can as they are grown in the same environment as you live and your body can use them much better than other foods. You will notice that these foods will make you feel better as soon as you start eating them. Keep on trying and experimenting with different foods until you find what is best for your body. Eating only super foods will not do you much good in the long run. The 10 healthiest super foods are blueberries, citrus fruits, garlic, tomatoes, brocoli, oats, salmon, spinach, nuts, and yoghurt.

Exercise

qg121xdmjdl041541220788454Exercise is important though in keeping healthy and is normally good for keeping the high cholesterol levels down as well. Exercise itself doesnt directly lower cholesterol, but will strengthen the heart and entire circulatory system. Exercise has so many benefits – maintaining function, controlling weight, lowering blood pressure, fighting depression, etc. A scheduled exercise program of aerobic exercises, strength training or even yoga can go a long way in toning up the lazy muscles. Ensure that you follow the exercise routine systematically and regularly.

Conclusion

The objective of every cholesterol diet is the same, though: to reduce circulating levels of low-density lipoproteins (LDL, the bad kind of cholesterol) and increase high-density lipoproteins (HDL). If you are in a high risk group, such as if you have diabetes, a no-cholesterol diet is even better than a low cholesterol diet. Bringing your diet and your cholesterol level under control with a low cholesterol diet is the best thing you can do to save your heart.

Adopting a low cholesterol diet is the other proven and highly recommended way for people to reduce cholesterol to healthier levels. The key to long term success with a low cholesterol diet is to continually monitor the cholesterol and saturated fats in the food you eat, to make sure no bad stuff gets back in. Probably the most important thing to do when shopping for food as part of a low cholesterol diet is learning to read labels. As always when dealing with health factors, you should consult a physician before self-prescribing a diet plan, exercise regime, or any dramatic life altering solution.

What You Need To Know About Brain Cancer

Posted by: admin | Comments (15)
What You Need To Know About Brain Cancer

Malignant brain tumors occur in about 4.5 people per 100,000 population, they may occur at any age but brain cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death in patients younger than age 35. In adults, incidence is generally highest between ages 40 to 60.

There are two main types of brain cancer. Primary brain cancer starts in the brain. Metastatic brain cancer starts somewhere else in the body and moves to the brain. The most common tumor types in adults are gliomas and meningiomas. In children, incidence is generally highest before age 1 and again between ages 2 and 12. The most common types of brain tumour in children are astrocytomas, medulloblastomas, ependymomas and brain stem gliomas.

CAUSES OF BRAIN CANCER

What causes brain cancer is not exactly known but there has recently been a great deal of speculation on the role of cell phone radiation in the development of brain cancer. In fact, while studies generally have shown no link between cell phones and brain cancer, there is some conflicting scientific evidence that may be worth additional study, according to the FDA.

More accepted risk factors for brain cancer include; exposure to vinyl chloride and individuals with risk factors such as having a job in an oil refinery, as a chemist, embalmer, or rubber industry worker show higher rates of brain cancer. Other risk factors such as smoking, radiation exposure, and viral infection (HIV) have been suggested but not proven to cause brain cancer. Patients with a history of melanoma, lung, breast, colon, or kidney cancer are at risk for secondary brain cancer.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF BRAIN CANCER

Onset of symptoms is usually insidious and brain tumors are often misdiagnosed. Brain Cancers cause central nervous system changes by invading and destroying tissues and by secondary effects such as pressure on the brain. Symptoms vary but in general, brain cancer symptoms include: Abnormal pulse and breathing rates, deep, dull headaches that recur often and persist without relief for long periods of time, difficulty walking or speaking, dizziness, eyesight problems including double vision, seizures, vomiting and at the late stages of the disorder dramatic changes in blood pressure may occur. Although headaches are often a symptom of brain cancer, it is important to remember that most headaches are due to less serious conditions such as migraine or tension, not cancer.

DIAGNOSIS OF BRAIN CANCERS

In most cases a definitive diagnosis is made by a tissue biopsy. Other diagnostic tools include; patient history, a neurologic assessment, skull x-rays, a brain scan, CT scan, MRI, a lumbar puncture and cerebral angiography. Meningiomas, arising from the covering around the brain or spinal cord, account for about 20% of brain cancers and are generally more benign.

TREATMENT OF BRAIN TUMORS

How to treat brain tumors depends on the age of the patient, the stage of the disease, the type and location of the tumor, and whether the cancer is a primary tumor or brain metastases. Brain cancer and brain tumors are somewhat unique because of the blood

brain barrier, which severely restricts the types of substances in the bloodstream that are allowed by the body into the brain and makes drug treatment extremely difficult. Because of this more and more research is being undertaken in delivering medication by means of nanoparticles, amongst the properties of nanoparticles that make them ideal candidates for recognizing and treating brain cancer, their ability to deliver a wide variety of payloads across the blood-brain barrier is perhaps the most important.

Brain cancers location and ability to spread quickly makes treatment with surgery or radiation like fighting an enemy hiding out among minefields and caves, and explains why the term brain cancer is all too often associated with the word inoperable.

Brain cancer survival statistics for the deadliest of tumors such as gliomas have not improved significantly over the past two decades and the clinical armamentarium is, to a large extent, still dependent on surgery and radiation therapy, treatments known to leave survivors with devastating cognitive deficits. Gamma knife surgery is a radiosurgery technique used to treat people with brain cancer and other neurological disorders

The most deadly form of brain cancer may be treatable with a vaccine that uses proteins. Unlike measles or mumps vaccines, which are meant to prevent disease, the brain cancer vaccine turns on the patient’s own immune system so it will help kill the tumor. When the vaccine is injected, it stimulates the immune system to kill off brain cancer cells and prevent the regrowth of tumors that have already been treated.

PROGNOSIS

The chances of surviving for a person with a brain tumor: Prognosis greatly depends on all of the following: type of tumor extent of the disease size and location of the tumor presence or absence of metastasis the tumor’s response to therapy, age, overall health, and medical history, tolerance of specific medications, procedures, or therapies. Metastatic brain cancer indicates advanced disease and has a poor prognosis. Unfortunately, the most common form of primary brain cancer, glioblastoma, is also the most aggressive and lethal but teratomas and other germ cell tumors although they have the capacity to grow very large may have a more favorable prognosis.

Asbestosis and Mesothelioma Medical Records Ignored by Nation Leaders

Medical records that pertain to asbestosis or mesothelioma must be dug up from the archives of the past. Without medical record collections and retrievals, the forewarnings of impending asbestosis and mesothelioma come only from witnessing the sufferings of an asbestosis patient or the languishing death of a mesothelioma cancer patient.

Asbestosis and mesothelioma statistics are sharply under-estimated due to the lack of many nations to implement an efficient medical retrieval system and properly care for and diagnose lung disease patients who are suffering from asbestosis or mesothelioma due to asbestos exposure. In many nations, physicians that are able to properly diagnose the disease are rarely, if ever, available. These same nations often have poor record keeping systems in place to monitor health trends and examine medical histories. Many times asbestosis and mesothelioma are simply referenced as “lung disease,” without a proper determination of the classification of lung disease.

Years pass before these progressive lung diseases start showing their scarring presence, but an archive of medical history can facilitate proper diagnosis, and national archives of medical histories can facilitate early warnings. Despite this knowledge, India has no cancer registry, nor does it have a system for recording mesothelioma and asbestosis cases. In the Philippines, the Occupational Safety and Health Center (OSHC) reports that asbestos caused diseases will be under diagnosed due to low employer participation in submitting medical records to a central agency. (Less than 5% of employers do so.)

In Brazil, where corporations scurry to cover any implications of occupational hazards or ill will, medical records are virtually non-existent for asbestos workers. The Eternit asbestos plant in Brazil has had asbestos workers for over 50 years, yet no medical records were ever kept prior to 1978. In China, death records are purged and permanently eliminated after death, leaving no source for documenting trends in deaths or comparisons and similarities between diseases. And although China is one of the top five asbestos producers and users in the world, this nation continues to have a minimal amount of empirical studies on the implications of asbestos exposure.

Fortunately, in many nations, allowable exposure limits are being reduced, inspections are being heightened, and politicians and corporations are being pressured. Environmental groups and protection agencies continue to test asbestos material and promote its eventual ban. Unfortunately, politics and corporations still govern irresponsible asbestos promotions, and millions of innocent people are unaware of its dangers. The lack of public awareness has led to a deadly economic dependency on asbestos.

Asbestosis and mesothelioma deaths need to be recorded, death records need to be maintained, and medical histories of asbestos workers need to be compiled to gain a full realization of the statistical and economical impact of the world’s burgeoning asbestosis and mesothelioma crisis. Asbestosis and mesothelioma records are useless, however, unless they are used to promote change and develop public awareness – which is precisely what the mining and trading nations are afraid of.

Mesothelioma Asbestos Claim: Know your Rights

As an American citizen you have many rights. The United Stated of America signed a very important document called the Declaration of Human Rights. In it, under article number 3 you will find that “everyone has the right to life…” With that said, almost everyone infected with mesothelioma got it by inhaling toxic asbestos fibers during a long period of time without any warning.
