A Dieting Revolution

A Dieting Revolution

The South Beach Diet is a revolutionary way of looking at weight loss. It isn’t low carb or low fat–it’s all about balance and learning to choose good fats and good carbs instead of foods that don’t help your body. This diet was developed by Miami cardiologist Arthur Agaston as a way for heart patients to lose weight in a healthy way and keep it off, but it was so successful that soon everyone wanted to try it. During the first two weeks on the South Beach Diet you’ll begin the process of learning to eat in a new way. You’ll eat three balanced meals a day with normal size portions of meat, seafood, vegetables, eggs, cheese, and nuts. You won’t be hungry and you’ll learn how to ignore cravings and avoid wanting to overeat. You get to have snacks twice a day, drink diet soda, and eat out, but there are a few things you can’t eat in the first two weeks. You can’t have bread, rice, potatoes, pasta, baked goods, candy, ice cream, sugar, or fruit. You also can’t have beer or alcohol. But it’s only for two weeks. After that, you get to add these foods back into your diet in a healthy way. After the first two weeks, the next phase of the South Beach Diet begins. You’ll still eat plenty of lean protein, vegetables, eggs, cheeses, and nuts, but you also get to add in some of your favorite carbohydrates and sugars. You’ll learn the difference between good carbs and bad carbs and learn to balance foods so that you stay full and have plenty of energy! You stick to this phase of the diet until you reach your target weight. Then you can add in even more carbs and sugars while still maintaining your new weight. Once you know how to balance healthy options with not-as-healthy favorites, it’s easy to eat what you love and still keep the weight off.The South Beach Diet is less of a diet and more of a way of life. It teaches you how to eat so that it isn’t such a struggle to be healthy. The foods emphasized are universally considered to be healthy choices rich in vitamins, minerals, omega-3 oils, and good fats. There are even prepackaged South Beach meal options that can be purchased online or in grocery stores, which makes it even easier to stay on track. What are some diets for a a lactose intolerant vegetarian?
I've been having a lot of stomach pains for about 3 years now and I never noticed a pattern in it. Well I've finally found it. After I eat or drink a dairy product my stomach hurts. But I'm also a vegetarian. What are some foods I can eat and some diets to lose and keep the weight off?

It's hard to say how much you should be eating when I don't know your height and weight or age. I'm pretty sure a granola bar for lunch is not enough. Most adults should be eating anywhere from 1500-2000 cals a day, a child or teen would need more. Check out http://www.thedailyplate.com, not only can you track your weight loss, goals and log your food the forums are amazing, The people are so easygoing and helpful :)

I’m not obese just a bit overweight and have tried the oil for the last week and I’ve cut down on junk food by 50%. I’m not very hungry anymore and when I do eat the food is good and healthy.

Hi Ernietube1:

I recently purchased Seith Roberts book. In the last chapter, he includes actual studies done by other researchers.

Go to Barnes & Noble, but do not buy the book. Just thumb through it and read the studies.

Good luck,

Paul.

Self experimentation and general curiosity constitutes a motivated scientist. Regarding it works,I doubt Robert will gain anything other than a good rep by freely explaining this

Go check Google library! They have uploaded thousands of free books on their virtual library. Atkins was a pretty popular book so it might be there.
Be Happy.
Be Healthy.
Good Luck.

The idea that too-high insulin levels cause all overeating doesn’t explain why sugar water caused me (and many others) to lose weight. Carbohydrates-are-bad theories predict that sugar water should cause weight gain, if it has any effect.

I've done very well on it, lost 35 lbs so far. I've also found that most of my aches and pains have gone away, but they come back if I start back on high-carbs.

Drawbacks: First of all, not everyone will lose weight as fast as he indicates. It's common for people to stall on the 3rd or 4th week. If you have a lot of weight to lose, you will probably find it goes in fits and starts. I personally tend to lose a bunch, then stay at the same weight for a long time, then lose a bunch more. However, I feel that this is my body adapting to it's new composition and shape. Give it time and stick to the plan, the weight will eventually come off.

The first week you will probably go through "induction flu" which is withdrawal from sugar. I was exhausted and my arm and legs felt like they weighed a ton. Once I got past that I was fine. Others experience actual flu-like symptoms.

The general consensus is to stick to real foods and avoid low-carb "products" as much as possible. Atkins is about learning a healthy new lifestyle, not substituting one kind of crap for another. Most of your carbs should be coming from veggies.

When you are in ketosis, you may have a funny taste/odor on your breath and odor in your urine from the ketones. You get used to it, many people suck on sugar free mints or chew sugarless gum to offset it. Personally, when I get that funny taste I'm happy because I know I'm burning fat.

The main thing is to make it a lifestyle. If you think of it as a "diet" that you're going to end, it becomes tedious – especially during those times when you are not losing. I now concentrate on eating in a healthy fashion and doing my exercise, I feel that in the long run my body will eventually settle at a weight that it is best for it.

I'm a member of a low-carb forum which I've found very helpful. The people there are really supportive, and it's motivating for me to go there regularly. There's lots of recipes too. They have a section devoted strictly to Atkins.

Good luck on your weight-loss/health journey!

I would like to see some scientific work on this diet.
Google Scholar only reference was to his book.

I am very skeptical of way out diets like VEGAN and RAW. These are usually promoted by people in minority groups trying to promote their own ridiculous life style.

umm, by "hearing wonderful feedback" do you mean you are reading the falsified comments on their web-page?

Take my advice, scrap tryin the latest fad, and instead come up with some placebo pill yourself. Throw up a website and make millions selling sh1t to people. Than use that money to buy lipo

It seems to me that what he’s talking about is changing your mind and your minds responses to hunger. By cutting out the appetizing snack (which does just that and gets you primed for more eating)you take in a flavorless substitute which calms your hunger impulses. So its a mind trip. But like the ancients say “fight poison with poison.” We are on an oral trip and constantly stuffing our mouths. Thats a head trip. Fight head trip with head trip. AUM!

Dr. Atkins is dead. He was a major proponent of low carb dieting, meaning severely restricting carbohydrates while eating lots of protein. While this method of dieting can bring short term results, it does not lend itself to a reasonable lifestyle for most people. Something like the South Beach Diet is a more balanced approach to reduced carb dieting.

Chances are your girlfriend, like most people, will quickly abandon this diet, which has severe limitations.

I know someone who lost 40 pounds doing DDR…I think it would depend how physically active you already are. They were a total couch potato and this got them off the couch but, hey, it couldn't hurt to try!
Good Luck!

One reference from Google-
webmd
“If The Shangri-La Diet sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
The diet’s premise is unusual. It is based on a few studies in rats, anecdotes of successful dieters, and the author’s personal experience — not the clinical trials that scientists insist upon when making public health recommendations.
More studies are needed to test what effect tasteless and unfamiliar foods have on appetite regulation”

We don’t overeat because of instinct, we overeat because the fucking food we’re given has no nutrition, if you eat healthy you won’t have that problem, duh!
