Free Health Insurance for College Student - is it Essential to Have College Health Insurance?

Now that you have finally completed your high school education and are now pursuing your dreams by attending college, there are a few things that you need to ponder over other than just worrying about studies. One such thing is the aspect of health insurance. All this while beginning from your childhood till you reached 20 years of age, you were covered under the health insurance of your parents and will no longer be covered under it. This will be a difficulty as you are not working now as you are in college. So, how do you tackle this problem? You need to consider taking up a college health insurance plan. But, make sure to go over the details of the plan to ensure that the plan is best for you.

The benefits provided through college health insurance plans vary from one institute to the other. Although the popular belief is that many wrongly assume that these services are for free. Although consultations and checkup will not be charged in anyway, the individual has to bear expenses like lab tests or consulting a specialist. If services are availed at the health center of the college, the insurance will usually cover the expenses and nothing is paid by the student. But, if a specialist outside the campus is consulted, the coverage goes down and a high deductible is usually necessary.

If the student suffers from any preexisting problems, these are not covered if treated even at the college campus health center. Although treatment can be availed, the expenses need to be borne by the student themselves. It also poses way for fresh trouble as any illness that arises as a complication of the preexisting illness is also not covered by the college health insurance plan.

Since college health insurance plans can vary from one campus to the other, it is best to thoroughly learn about the benefits provided by your college health insurance plan. Check if the insurance plan provides coverage during your holidays when the college is not functioning and classes are not on. This needs to be checked as any mishap or illness during your holidays might not get coverage as your college health insurance may not be active during this period. While some plans provide coverage during this period, others might not.

Also, check about the details provided with the plan. See if the plan belongs to HMO type or you can just visit any physician under the plan? This is important to keep in mind for you to seek proper care in case of any medical emergency because if you have to visit a physician or hospital within a prescribed network you will be in trouble if you visit someone outside the given network.

Although it is debated on both sides about the essentiality of a college student opting for college health insurance, there is no ultimate answer. But, if you are planning on taking up one, it is best to thoroughly understand every benefit and detail about the plan so that you will not be in for a surprise when any emergency arises. While the insurance does not come free of cost, it will definitely be useful in case of any medical expenses due to an unexpected illness or a mishap.

I think it is fair to provide healtcare for those that CANNOT work. I am not talking about those who don't want to work. For those that can work, we should have a scale. You can't just set an income scale or bracket. In my state (2 bedroom apartment rents for $1550) you can't live on $60K a year with a family that has 2 children. In some others you can. So here is the fair plan.

- We set a local income scale based on average living expenses in a local. Probably by county.
-The Fed subsidizes it by a percentage up to the cap for what is consider poor based on the scale.
-Everyone buys commercial insurance if they want it and get a tax break for doing so. Those the are under the cap, get a subsidy.
-The government negotiates for best prices with the big providers, and there is a discount that is good for all. (Like Massachusetts)

This way, for those that can self-insure, are Christian Science or friends of Ron Hubbard, they are not forced ot have it. If you need it and want it, it is affordable. And if you priorities are a new HD TV and car that you can't afford, and not insurance, don't get sick.

Yes, employers can pretty much do whatever they choice as far as how much benefits that they provide.
With the cost of everything going up, employers are considering cost, and they are making employees pay for some of the cost of their medical benefits. Many, many, companies are following the same trend.
With a lot of people out of work, you have to consider the fact that you are employed, and go ahead a pay the cost of the medical.
You can always decide to look for another job, but you won't find too many companies that provide medical 100%.

Monopolies huh? Why do you think they have monopolies. The govt refusal to discuss more on that issue is alarming to me. They would rather pass more taxes and mandates then actually break down the barriers to healthcare. They are looking for a fund raiser via tax payer. No company has incentive to change their practices until the consumers demand it by the power of their dollar. To bad the govt wont allow for consumers to actually use their buying power by allowing cross state buys.

If Humana has any guts, they will step up their mailings. What a bunch of thugs who work for Obama. A one term president if I’ve ever seen one.

carebear, Health insurance can be very tricky. Since I'm from Idaho I'm not sure about California regulations, so I suggest you visit a nearby insurance agent. http://www.goodinternetdeals.com/Health-Insurance.html They will be able to help you.

I think you guys need to relax. The end of the clip reveals the real crux of the matter: HHS is looking into whether the mailings ILLEGALLY appear to be official communications from Medicare. It appears that the HHS is not, as McConnell claims, telling companies they can’t communicate with their customers; it’s saying they can’t pretend to be Medicare.

8

DO NOT relax on this issue! Contact your elected officials and let them know how disturbing this is to you. Our government is quite capable of investigating these mailings in question without placing a gag order on Humana!! A follow-up mailer would certainly resolve this issue if, in fact, a fair investigation and followup discussion with private provider determines said mailer was misleading.

it may be free but not better..some people are on waiting lists for a simple MRI for months while here in America we pay but can get it done the next day..

i look for website and found this health insuranse website

Oh, Humana Insurance Company is just worried about your health benifits. Would you hire a crocodille to babysit? Insurnance monopolies are worse. They’re serial murderers. What would you call monopolies that are responsible for 18,000 of our neighbors dying every year? Do you know anyone who has no healthcare and has a serious illness or just getting old? If you said no, than I suggest you start caring for others.

There are many places to get an on-line quote. Here is another: http://www.yourhealthplanadvisor.com/ooshealth.html and I'm sure if you do an internet search you'll find many more.

You can get an idea of costs on-line, but there are hundreds of plans available and how do you know if you've choosen the best one for your situation? It'll take you several days to intelligently compare all the plans available. Also, if you have any pre-existing conditions that might add a rider to the policy, cause you to be declined, or if you are out of the height and weight guidelines you won't know until you've applied and gone through the underwriting process which is a big waste of time. You should contact a local independent agent who can work with you to find the best policy and will weed out the plans that won't accept you because of any health condition or will not cover you to your expectations. The plans and premiums are no different using an agent.

Max Baucus is trying as hard as he can to derail health care reform for his insurance company sponsors. You won’t find other dems pulling stupid stunts like this one.

Humana to repay government $14.5 million for double-dipping Medicare fees

I live in Illinois and myself and my children get an All Kids Care card. I am also covered on it. I get it through the Department of Human Services (public aid office). You might want to try your local one, you could also call Family Planning or The Crisis Pregnancy Center for more information. I am sure they have some type of coverage for pregnant women and your child when he/she is born. Good Luck!!

16

HHS issued the gag order, and HHS will be the ones distributing benefits as the ‘Health Information Exchange’ under the plan. That would be a conflict of interests as far as their supposed investigation goes. And they’ve just voted to nix publication of the bill – WHAT a surprise.
