Health Tips for New College Students
By adminHealth Tips for New College Students
Staying healthy on campus may be one of the more overlooked items of importance when it comes to college living…especially when there are more important things such as deadlines and midterms to be concerned with. But what many college students tend to forget is that on campus, illnesses run rampant especially in the winter. The risks are too great to avoid a daily dose of healthy reminders in order to stay healthy and not have to miss too much class for reasons that could have been avoided. Here are some tips to help college students stay healthy and going strong at the university.
First, before heading off to college, it would be a good thing to get your vaccinations in order. There is a big mix of completely different people from all around the world in close quarters with one another and disease and illness can be easily spread, especially when using shared resources like those of colleges and universities.
Put together a healthy eating plan. With the hectic schedule college demands, it is very easy to simply grab whatever is easy to eat such as a double cheeseburger and onion rings…every day. The dorms make it very easy to not only consume deep fried foods regularly, but in quite an amazing abundance. Try to focus on a healthy diet, sticking with fruits and vegetables and try to make those things, such as french fries, you know shouldn’t be going into your body more like rewards than an everyday necessity in your diet.
Get enough sleep. Sleep is so important in order to keep yourself healthy. Many college students believe sleep is overrated, yes, I confess…but now I correct that mistake. Lack of sleep will only make things worse in the lines of illnesses and even academics. Yes, you may do just fine without sleep, but just think about how much more you will enjoy your college experience while potentially even doing better than you are WITHOUT sleep. No sleep = heightened risk of illness due to lower immune system defense and more.
Try to keep a regular exercise schedule. Sitting around and studying may exercise your brain cells but not necessarily the rest of your body. You can use the college gym or just take a run, but it is a good thing to get the blood circulating through your body and brain. This oxygenation will help improve your studies and will make many things a lot easier for you in the long run, not to mention boost your immune system.
Drink plenty of water. Many students tend to forget this and simply grab a soda. Let’s see…you need a quick drink as you are on the go, ah yes soda machine! You stick your hand in your pocket to find only a little change left. “Oh man I forgot I had those other three sodas earlier. Darn, I am so thirsty and I need something for class!”
Keep a water bottle in your bag and keep it filled. It does wonders and not to mention helps keep your body healthy.
In regards to the “communal living” aspect of college, make sure you are cautious of all the different people who use the restroom at your dorm. This is not home where mom may clean up after you. The college restrooms are, indeed, cleaned once a day or so, but they can get dirty really quick. Wear flip flops in the shower and make sure you try to avoid placing things on the counter tops such as razors that you may be shaving and such with. Be sure to wash your hands regularly in college as well.
Even though it may be rather difficult to remember to do all these things, this is not all. In fact there are many other tips at our website and more. But all I am trying to say in this article is to simply be a little more cautious about staying healthy in college in order to help you stay healthy as well as others. Good luck with all of your future college endeavors and stay well!

YOu need to drink alot of water and get you matabolism going! Heres how:
THIS WORKS FOR SURE
this may seem nasty but it works!!!!!!!!!!!! trust me.
1. Drink 1-2 tblespoons of APPLE CIDER VINEGAR!(twice daily) this kind of vinegar helps your body burn fat! look it up. (its all over the web)
2. Drink Green Tea. Perferably in the Morning and Evening. This also burns fat by increasing your matabalism. look it up (its all over the web)
3. For breakfast eat = half a grapefruit! grapefruit is great for you and it takes more energy to digest than most fruits. Guess what that means? your body burns more fat!
4. If your really serious take a small amount of water and mix 1/2 teaspoon of CAYENNE Pepper (or more) and swallow that really fast. Chilli Pepper works too. Its not that hot and if you swallow it fast only the back of your throat will burn a little. These peppers make your matabolism go really fast NATURALLY!
5. Pick 3 of the ab workouts from this site http://www.shapefit.com/workout-routines...
do 1 of set in the morning of each (after eating your grapefruit and tea) do 3 sets of each, every night! (or more)
6. Walking will help ALOT! walk to your friends house, to the park, around the corner, take your dog on a walk, walk around your house a couple of times, SOMETHING!
7. While watching your favorite tv show do jumping jacks. Youll be so into the show you wont even realize your doing jacks! Take a break during 2 or 3 commercials. Before you start Drink a BIG cup of water. After you finish drink 2 big cups of water in 30 mins.
8. Drink at least half a gallon of water a day.
9. Eat less. Eat healthy. NO SUGAR. (or very very littile of it)
10. Dont weigh yourself. You will have alot of water weight so the scale might not be accurate. Just pinch the fat on your stomach. Notice how much you pinch. Pinch your fat everynight. after a coule of weeks notice how you will start to pinch less and less!
11. Tell me your results!

As a fellow student, I understand your struggle. My butt feels constantly glued to a seat and I don't have the time or attention for planning healthy meals. It's tough but I manage to control my weight and even lose weight every now and then with some pretty easy tactics. Since you want to lose it, you'll have to get serious. I would highly recommend cardio workouts. Depending on your fitness level and personal tastes you could try at home workouts like Tae Bo or you can hit the gym (in which case walking or jogging on the tredmill mixed with weights would be effective). Basically, make yourself workout even when you feel tired from studying or a long day. Next thing you know, you'll look forward to the stress relief. Remember to watch what you eat and consider counting calories…you may be surprised how much you eat daily! Get sleep. Lack of sleep stresses the bod out and you may compensate with food. And you definitely will have less energy for workouts. GOOD LUCK!

You may want to consider a health savings account or at least choose a plan with a very high deductible.
This way you will have a very low monthly cost but if you choose a reputable company will still have coverage in case you ever get hit with a large medical bill.
Here is some more information finding cheap health insurance and specifically on finding health insurance in New York:

I would go to your college career center. They will really be able to help you more. When I was in college I went to the career center, which was very helpful. They showed me listings of internships with or with out pay, and also part time jobs with pay. The jobs they offer to you will most likely depend on your major, and also what your interest is. If your confused about what you would like to do, the career center is very good at helping you take the next steps. So visit your college career center and go from there. Some suggestions as to what jobs you can apply for is research jobs pertaining to the healthcare field such as research assistant. Some research jobs are really good at offering internships, and also jobs primarily for the summer.

As far as the binges go, try to get the info on the beers you typically come into contact with concerning their calories and carbs. The pizza, try to stick to cheese as a rule. A single slice of pepperoni adds 4 calories to your pizza. Also, dab your pizza with a napkin or two first to remove as much grease as possible.
As for the nutrition, or lack there of at the food court, stick to the basics. Fruits and salads are always great, lean meats like chicken, some steak and fish are always a plus. Grains and pastas are a winner in moderation. Don't forget though that you do need some fats so the occasional peanut butter cookie or two won't hurt. =]
A mindful eating plan paired with an active lifestyle should keep you on the right track while at university. Hope this helps.

It is so hard to keep a dorm room clean. It's hard to straighten everything when you have no where to put it in such a small room. Below is an article on how to quickly clean your dorm room. I have a house now, but this method helped in college and I still use it in my home today. Cleaning a little tiny bit each day is the key.
Here is an article about how to clean your room:
