There are no disadvantages to teaching children about AIDS/HIV. Like it or not, these diseases exist and educating children to prevent transmission and to treat people with these conditions with care prevents prejudice and the rate of the disease growing. Pretending they don't exist only lead to a generation growing up ignorant and complacent.

Teaching small kids doesn't mean that you have to go into deep detailed explanations about sex. Just simple points like avoiding touching other people's blood, never take drugs and that the disease can't be transmitted through sharing drinks or the bathroom is enough for primary school children.

im not going to look for a study, youd be hard pressed to argue that increasing awareness of a preventable disease will not reduce transmission. think of some diseases they dont talk about in school. if you arent in the healthcare field, how much do you know about them and what needs to be done to prevent them? do you know as much about hiv as you do hepatitis A? how about type 2 diabetes which is an 80-90% preventable disease, that affects something like 5-10% of american adults nowadays?

transmission has slowed quite a bit in the US due to increased awareness (whtehr that be from school or other educational exposure) while it is the same or increasing in places like africa where people dont know anything about it

The problem is that it's pretty difficult to maintain an educational system when your teachers are dying off because of AIDS.

AIDS is wiping out an entire generation of working adults in Africa, and this is a huge problem because their economy (like most others) is dependent on having adults in the workforce. Who is surviving the AIDS crisis in Africa? Children and the elderly (both groups have their own issues to worry about!).

So take all the teachers out of the system, and you will have a generation of children who will not be educated and will not gain any useful skills for working. Take out one working generation, and you can't replace the next one!
