How to Start a Low Cholesterol Diet Plan

For many people finding out they have high cholesterol may come as a shock. While it is a serious health problem for many people remedying the situation can be as easy as following a low cholesterol diet plan. In fact this will probably be the first thing any good doctor will recommend. The first time putting together this type of diet can be a little confusing but there are many resources available to help with everything from food selection to meal planning.

The main thrust of a low cholesterol diet is to reduce not only the amount of cholesterol one eats but also saturated fats and trans fats. Many studies into the way cholesterol works in the body have found that these two types of fats are actually more responsible for high blood cholesterol levels then foods that are naturally high in cholesterol.

Examining your daily diet will be the starting point for any changes that need to be made. One of the first areas that will need to be looked at and changed is the daily intake of red meats. These should be eaten in moderation and leaner cuts such as chicken and fish should be used. Red meats contain more saturated fats then more lean choices which can lead to a significant cholesterol increase. You should also bake, broil, or even use the grill as these allow the fats to drain away from the meat.

Frying is no longer a good way to prepare any foods as the oils used will just add fat back into the foods negating any cholesterol lowering affects. This will make for a change in many peoples cooking habits but there are tasty alternatives to frying out there. There are a variety of herbs, spices, and seasoning available that bring out and enhance the flavors if foods. Many of these seasoning also have additional health benefits and will open up whole a new way of cooking that is healthy and full of flavor.

Dairy is another area that many people will need to make changes in. Most dairy products are high in saturated fat that needs to be avoided. This does not mean that dairy has to be completely given up, but it is important to make the switch to low fat products for all milk products, including cheese and butter. You can also substitute skim or soy milk for your daily milk consumption.

Another dairy product that can be confusing is eggs. The yolk of an egg is high in cholesterol and many people separate the whites from the yolk before using just the egg whites in their low cholesterol meal plans. The cholesterol in egg yolks is not necessarily bad if they are eaten in moderation. Of more concern are the saturated fats that many eggs are combined with, such as comes with bacon or sausage. This type of fat raises blood cholesterol levels more then the cholesterol found in eggs.

Starting a low cholesterol diet plan usually begins with your doctor. He or she can get you pointed in the right direction with the resources you need to take back control of your health. You can also find any number of books and internet sites that are good resources for food selection, recipes, and meal preparation. A low cholesterol diet is not something to be afraid of. It is the first step in taking control of your health and living your life to its fullest.

Help answer the question

Is their a "diet" frozen pizza out there for people with high-cholesterol?
I have now been on my low-cholesterol diet for 3 weeks now, its not as bad as I thought it would be, I have been trying to find healthy substitutes to some of my favorite meals, and one I am having trouble with is Frozen Pizza. I know I could make my own, but I want something that I can pick up quick for those days that I just don't feel like cooking.

Honestly from the sounds of it you probably are not eating enough.
You need to figure out what your metabolic rate is (how many calories you burn a day just for your body to sustain its self.)
This is a good formula to do that,
your weight (in lbs) x 4.3
add 655
plus your height (in inches) x 4.7
minus your age x 4.7

Once you have that number, you want to subtract 500-7000 from that number, but no more than that or else your body will go into starvation mode.
Remember that 1lb is equal to 3500 calories, so if you are deficient by 500 calories every day, plus you burn 500 working out then you will lose about 2 lbs a week, which is the safest amount to lose.
When I first started dieting, sparkpeople.com was a super website that I used, its basically like a myspace or facebook for dieters, they build you a meal plan based on your likes and dislikes, suggest workouts, and have discussion groups for support.

ps. dieting with a guy is the most frustrating thing in the entire world, I make my boyfriend diet with me and he always loses weight without much effort. Dont let it get to you, it has to do with hormones.
Good luck!!

I don’t understand. Can you please tell me how does Cholesterol effect diabetes? How does it raise or lower blood sugar levels? I am trying to help my husband control his blood sugar levels, but I don’t know about this cholesterol problem. He eats 4 eggs a day! Maybe that is why he is having trouble with low blood sugar problems.???

Well … first of all, the results of your A1C have nothing to do with fasting. The A1C is a blood test that can tell what your average blood sugar level has been for the last 3 months. the fasting would have been for the glucose test, and maybe some of your other non-diabetes related tests.

Now, if you're dieting, exercising and losing weight, your numbers will get better. It doesn't mean you don't have diabetes anymore … my understanding of it is, is that you will have to exercise and eat healthy for the rest of your life to keep your numbers in the good range.

First of all, I don't like any Statin (cholesterol medication). They are extremely dangerous (read the literature) and you will feel that your must stay on them for life (just what the Doctors want). Total cholesterol is not a good indicator. Its the ratios. The best is your Trigylceride total divided by your good HDL. If it is less than 5, you are okay. For women your HDL should be over 50 mg/dl. There is a natural remedy that works for most people better than any statin with out side effects. It called Waddle Juice. Here the recipe:

==64 oz of 100% welches Red Grape Juice
==8 oz of Apple Cider Vinegar ( has to be apple cider vinegar)
==3 oz pack of liquid pectin ( Certo or Ball in the canning section at Grocery store)

Mix up throughly, Refrigerate and Drink 2 oz three times a day forever.

People have reported drops in their cholesterol as much as 50 points with in a month and reduction in blood pressure.

It all natural and you can make it your self.

Most cholesterol and heart disease is caused by simple carbohyrates (sugar, bread, rice, potatoes, etc….). Excessive insulin secretion causes the liver to produce more bad cholesterol and store more fat.

Eat more protein. Depending on your blood type, meat or vegetable.
Type O and B eat meat and Type A and AB eat vegetable protein.

If you do decide to take a statin, besure to take 300 mg of Q10 a day for ever. This replaces the Q10 the Statin flush out of your muscles including your heart.

Good luck!!!!

For 1200 calories a day, I'd go for:

65-70g fat (15g saturated)
100-120g protein
50g carbs

You need fat when on a diet. If you're not taking in enough fat, your body will hold on to all your fat stores.
Personally I'd change your workout a bit as well. Try interval training instead of hour long sessions a couple of times a week, and weights/bodyweight sessions a couple of times a week.

Hope this helps.

This is definitely a solid plan. What I would do is try to mix up your workout routine if you hit a plateau, because your body will get used to the same movements after a while. However, the amount of time you're putting into it will be excellent to burn fat and also build up some lean muscle. The key to weight loss has always been to burn off more calories than you take in. If you do that, you're golden! :) One piece of advice… if you notice the scale stop moving DON'T PANIC. Start taking your measurements also, you may find that you're losing inches. If you're gaining muscle and losing fat at the same time, this may cause the scale to either stop moving OR move in the wrong direction. Just pay attention to how well your pants feel and don't get discouraged. Good luck!!

wow. Looks like you had allot of thought to this. My thoughts to this. People have been drinking milk for positively centuries and millenia. If you like it, drink it. If you don't, don't.

i always monitor my calorie intake from my diet because i have a very slow metabolism and i dont want to get overweight.~..

i would not be using Diet Pills that much because they are sometimes dangerous specially if they come from China.,-.
